Valeda™ PBM for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Monterey, CA

Monterey Bay Eye Center is introducing Valeda™ PBM, a light-based treatment for certain patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. Valeda™ uses photobiomodulation (PBM) to deliver specific wavelengths of light to the retina. This treatment is designed to support retinal cell health and help improve visual acuity in appropriately selected patients.

If you or a loved one has dry AMD, blurry central vision, difficulty reading, trouble seeing in low light, or straight lines that appear wavy, schedule an evaluation to find out whether Valeda™ may be right for you.

What Is Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Central vision helps you:

  • Read
  • Drive
  • Recognize faces
  • Watch television
  • Use a phone
  • Perform close-up tasks

There are two main forms of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD.

Dry AMD is the more common form. It develops gradually as retinal cells and the macula change over time. Many patients may have mild symptoms at first, while others may not notice symptoms until the condition progresses.

Common Symptoms of Dry AMD

  • Blurry or fuzzy central vision
  • Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
  • Reduced brightness or intensity of colors
  • Difficulty adapting to low light
  • Trouble reading, driving, recognizing faces, or doing close-up work
  • A dark, blurry, or missing area in the center of vision

Dry AMD can progress over time, which is why early diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and timely treatment discussions are important.

What Is Valeda™ PBM?

Valeda™ PBM is a non-invasive light therapy for eligible patients with dry age-related macular degeneration.

PBM stands for photobiomodulation. During treatment, the Valeda™ Light Delivery System uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate activity within retinal cells.

The goal is to support cellular energy production and retinal cell health. For the right candidate, Valeda™ treatment may help improve visual function and support vision now and over time.

Why Patients Are Asking About Valeda™

For many years, dry AMD care focused heavily on monitoring, nutritional support, lifestyle changes, and watching for progression. Valeda™ gives eligible dry AMD patients a non-invasive treatment option that can be discussed earlier in the disease process.

Common Questions Patients Ask

  • Is there a treatment for dry AMD?
  • Can dry macular degeneration be slowed down?
  • Is there a non-injection treatment for macular degeneration?
  • What is Valeda™ light therapy?
  • Am I a candidate for photobiomodulation for dry AMD?

At Monterey Bay Eye Center, our team can evaluate your eye health, review your diagnosis, and determine whether Valeda™ PBM is appropriate for your stage and type of AMD.

Who May Be a Candidate for Valeda™ ?

Valeda™ is intended for certain patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. Candidacy depends on your vision, retinal findings, imaging results, and whether you have dry AMD without features that would make the treatment inappropriate.

You may be a candidate if you have been diagnosed with dry AMD and are noticing:

  • Blurry vision
  • Visual distortion
  • Reduced contrast
  • Difficulty reading
  • Difficulty seeing in low light

A full evaluation is needed to confirm whether Valeda™ is right for you.

During your visit, Monterey Bay Eye Center may perform:

  • A comprehensive eye exam
  • Retinal imaging
  • Diagnostic testing to assess the type and stage of macular degeneration

Important Note

Valeda™ may not be appropriate for every patient, including patients with wet AMD or certain advanced forms of dry AMD. Your eye doctor will explain the benefits, risks, limitations, and alternatives based on your individual diagnosis.
